The servo unit has two switches (56) near the sewing point (60) to switch each needle shaft (4) of a multi-needle sewing machine in or out of action. The first setting unit (28) temporarily interrupts the advance action on the fabric (11) and a second setting unit (45) temporarily adjusts the tension applied to each of the sewing threads.
