The belt (2) with sprocket holes (4) in its edges is unwound from a supply reel (6) to a take-up reel (12), passing under an optical measuring device (10). Test strips (20) are laid across it at regular intervals and aligned by guide blocks (13,14,16,18) before being clamped by a gripper (22) at one end. The strips (20) of e.g. polystyrene are sealed to the belt (2) of e.g. paper by ceramic resistive heating elements (36,38) which are moved up under the belt (2) to co-operate with descending dies (40-42) for 1 or 2s. Alternatively, the seal may be implemented by stapling.
