The image storage screen (24) for latent storage of the x-ray image has a diode matrix light source (25) scanned across the surface of the screen for stimulating light emission. The emitted light is detected for controlling an image reproduction system (31), e.g. a display monitor. Each light-emitting diode (26) within the diode matrix light source (2) is individually coupled to a point of the screen (24), either directly or via an optical fibre coupling path (27). Pref. the diodes (26) lie in a line corresponding in length to the width of the screen (24).
