A segmented drive cage for a sub-calibre heavy shell has one or more recesses (26) in the rear portion (14) of each of its segments (10), the or each recess terminating in a guide/seal strip (24) and contg. a barrel wear-reducing additive (36), pref. consisting of TiO2, wax and binder. Pref. the recess (26) is pref.in the form of a radical blind hole (26) connected to an axial blind hole (28) and provided with an additive cartridge (36). The additive is expelled from the radial bore (26) by the gas pressure of the propellant charge gases and is distributed onto the barrel inner wall in the region of the guide/seal strip (24). ADVANTAGE - The design provides targetted supply and distribution of the additive onto the barrel inner wall.
