The wood splitting machine has fixed blades (6,7); a hydraulically-operated, horizontal ram (10); and a collector duct which is underneath the gap between the cutter blades and the ram surface. At the top of the collector duct is a housing (26) in which is an opening through which the wood is inserted. The opening is covered by a movable flap (20) which is connected by a telescopic coupling to the operating piston of a control valve. The flap is locked by a hook (37) movably mounted parallel to the ram. The hook is pressed into a closed positoin by a spring, and into an open position by the ram plate (10). The flap has a U-shaped handle (23). USE/ADVANTAGE - Injuries to the people working with the wood splitting machine are avoided by a housing enclosing it, with the rounds of cut wood collected in an underneath duct.
