The data storage device (1) has a pattern of cylindrical permanent magnets (2) located in holes in a plate of non magnetic material, e.g. aluminium or plastic. The magnetic insert are located at specific points and are separated sufficiently such that there is no interference effect. At either end of the carrier are position locating magnets (5,6). The specific cocking represented by the selected pattern of inserts is read by a unit (3) that has Hall effect sensors (4) positioned in locations corresponding to those of the magnets. Position sensors (7,8) provide a trigger signal for the read cycle. Outputs are transferred to the memory of a controller (10). ADVANTAGE - Reliable reading of magnetically coded data.
