Contactlessly measuring thickness of very large objects - using ultrasound and measuring transition times of pulses between sensors on either side of object and between sensors and object surfaces
Contactlessly measuring thickness of very large objects - using ultrasound and measuring transition times of pulses between sensors on either side of object and between sensors and object surfaces
A method of contactlessly measuring the thickness of objects (B) using ultrasonic pulse transmission and reception involves detecting and evaluating echo pulses and determining the object distance from the pulse transmission time. The object (B), which is transparent to ultrasound, is placed between two ultrasonic pulse sources (S1,S2), each of which receives the pulses from the other. The sensor separation is determined from the pulse transition times. The distances of the sensors from the surfaces (B1,B2) are determined from the echo pulse transition times and the object thickness is derived by subtration. USE/ADVANTAGE- For contactless thickness measurement of very large objects, esp. flat objects laid along a path, e.g. felt web material during prodn. process.
