Combustable components of aq. sewage sludges are oxidised in a gas-solid diffuser (3) consisting of a conical reaction chamber with sepn. chamber above, with a central lower air inlet (5) for combustion air, and sludge (8) and solid and/or liq. fuel inlet (9). The sludge is mixed with inert, fluidisable solid (7) and is oxidised. The reaction chamber has a cone angle of 30-100 deg. inert solid is pref. sand. ADVANTAGE - Oxidn. in single stage with heat generation.
