Finely crystalline priming explosive (PE) having a grain size below 50, pref. 10-40, esp. 1-10 microns is produced by comminuting PE having a grain size above 100 microns in a non-solvent using a high speed stirrer operating by the stator/rotor principle. The PE is Pb azide, 'tetrazen', Pb nitroresorcinate, Pb picrate, Ag azide and/or diazodinitrophenol. The non-solvent is water and/or EtOH. The ratio non-solvent: PE is 100-5:1. The stirring rate is 1,000 rpm. to ultrasound. ADVANTAGE - Provides highly efficient process.
