The space (3) contg. a liq. is closed by a diaphragm (2) of electrically conductive material (e.g. Al) sepd. by an insulating film (5) from a flat coil (4) of enamelled Cu wire, loosely wound on a tubular ceramic former (6) and connected (9,10) to a high-voltage pulse generator (11). The thickness (d) in the direction of propagation is at least half of the wavelength of the shock waves in the wire. A cover (7) is screwed (8) to the casing (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - In e.g. noninvasive lithotriptic surgery, a very durable source of pressure waves is achieved without high-impedance backing.
