New N-substd. 3,3-imino:di:propionic acid derivs. - useful as surfactants, esp. flotation aids, flocculating agents, corrosion inhibitors and foaming agents for aerated concrete

N-Substd. 3,3'-iminodipropionic acids of formula X-N(CH2CH2COOH)2 (I) are new. In (I), X = SO2R, SO2NHR, CSNHR, CSSR, CO(CH2)m SC(S)OR, CO(CH2)m SC(S)NHR or CSS(CH2)mCONHR; R = 6-18C alkyl; m = 1-3. (I) may be prepd. from the corresp. nitriles of formula X-N(CH2CH2CN)2 (II) by alkaline or acid hydrolysis. Alkaline hydrolysis is effected by refluxing with KOH, reacting with H2SO4 to form the amide, nitrosating the amide with NaNO2, and eliminating N2. Acid hydrolysis is effected by reacting with MeOH in the presence of HCl and treating the resulting ester with alkali. USE - (I) are surfactants useful as flotation aids (esp. as collectors for separating fluorite from calcite), flocculating agents, corrosion inhibitors, and foaming agents for aerated concrete mfr.
