The optical bench has a guide rail and a carriage (3) or rider movable along the rail and which can be stopped in different positions using a clamp mechanism (4). The clamp mechanism has a fixing part (6) which can be applied to the rail rigidly or by spring force. The fixing part is acted upon by a set screw (5). There is a sprung connection (7) between the set screw and fixing part. The set screw has an open, inner axial aperture (8) in its acting surface (10). This accepts a helical spring (7) and can also accept an application element. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for use in research to enable distances between optical components to be set up. Enables precise positioning and locking of carriage without need for readjustment.
