A two stage press for pressing sheet metal workpieces (1) has the stages separated by a space in which a template (7) is installed. The template is mounted on two horizontal bars which are supported by short bars (9) attached to a frame (8). When a workpiece has passed through the first forming stage it is held in the intermediate space whilst the frame is moved upwards and inserts the template into the workpiece in order to check that the first operation has been correctly carried out.
