The specificity of a particular heterogeneous process, taking place on a matrix, is improved relative to other heterogeneous processes by: (1) using a porous and non-diffusion limited matrix; (2) using a sufficiently short retention time of the liq. phase within the pores of the matrix so as to favour quicker or earlier processes, and (3) making the heterogeneous process depend on absorption, chemical alteration by catalysis or chemical alteration by reaction with the matrix. The processes occur between components of the liq. phase and of the matrix which is permeated convectively by this liq. phase. USE/ADVANTAGE - Typical applications are (1) controlling specificity of sepn. of proteins on ion exchangers by variation of pH and ionic strength and (2) materials sepn; esp. from complex biological fluids, e.g. sepn. of serum albumin (SA) and immunoglobulin (Ig) on a strongly acidic membrane ion exchanger.
