The coder has an input (E) to which source words (q f) are supplied and a unit (C), in which the binary code words (cf) are generated according to a prescription stored in a memory, or realised by a network. The output (A) transmits the code words. The number of the source words for coding is specified. They are associated to code words with a specified bit width. Each group with a bit width l is fed to a Johnson coder (JS), while a second group with the bit width k is supplied to a Gray coder (GC) either unchanged, or inverted in an inverting stage of a control circuit (S). The change between unchanged and inverted takes place when the code word changes the output of the Johnson coder. ADVANTAGE - Improved coding and decoding process.
