The transformer has primary (11) and secondary (12) windings of copper wire inductively coupled via the core (13) that is formed of laminated steel. Set into the secondary winding the compensation cores (14, 15) also of laminated steel. The cores are formed with air gaps (16,17) that are at least as long as the secondary coil height. The cores are not inductively coupled to the primary. An alterative version has primary and secondary coils mounted in line on the centre limb of a core, with the compensation cores surrounding the secondary coil. ADVANTAGE - Improved efficiency.
