Measuring specific fuel consumption and torque of motor vehicle IC engine - setting engine speed at full throttle by braking then idling while measuring average consumption and crankshaft acceleration
The measuring method involves a preparatory phase in which the vehicle is brought to a speed in a defined gear with the engine speed above a defined value. The engine is held at the speed for a few seconds with full throttle whilst the average consumption is measured against crankshaft angle. The engine speed is reduced by a defined amount by braking under full throttle. The brakes are released and the speed increased to one the same value above the defined value whilst measuring crankshaft acceleration and average consumption against crankshaft rotation. The crankshaft angular deceleration is measured in an ideal phase. The torque and specific consumption are derived from the measured values. ADVANTAGE - Specific fuel consumption and effective torque are measured without removing engine or using special test stand.
