Removing coloured components from water - by extn. with water immiscible prim. amine, esp. from textile, leather or paper dyeing, or from paper mfr.
Coloured components are removed from water by extn. with a prim. amine which is water-immiscible or only partly water-miscible. Amine is pref. H2N-R, partic. octylamine, 2-ethylhexyl-amine, decylamine, dodecylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, octadecylamine, behenylamine, oleylamine, amine mixts. e.g, from natural oils and fats, aminomethylcyclohexane, 5-amino-1,1,3-trimethylcyclohexane, methylcyclohexylamine, norbornylmethylamine, ring-alkylated benzylamine, aniline (opt. ring-alkylated), 4,4'-diaminoyclohexyl-methane, bis-(4-amino-3-methylcyclohexyl)methane, bis-aminomethyl-hexahydro-7-methane-indan, adducts from acrylonitrile and mono- or poly-functional alcohols, amines, aminoalcohols or mercaptans, where the nitrile gps. are (partly) converted to prim. amino gps. by hydrogenation, 3-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-propylamine, N-monoalkylpropylene diamine, mono- and polyethers from ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide in which terminal OH gps. have been (partly) converted to prim. amino gps., polyethylene- and polypropylene-amines partly converted with acylating and/or alkylating agents, amineamide derivs. and/or imidazoline derivs. R = at least 8C (un)satd., (un)branched aromatic or aliphatic hydrocarbon gp., opt. contg. heteroatoms. Treatment is at pH 5-12 and 5-80 deg. C, using the amine pure or dil. with a water-insol. solvent. Amt. of amine, or of organic phase contg. amine, is 20 ppm-20 wt. %, w.r.t. the water. Ater the extn., liq. amines are recovered by distn., or the loaded amine phase is extracted with an aq. alkaline phase. USE/ADVANTAGE - Decolourisation of waste water, esp. from textile, leather or paper dyeing, or from paper mfr. Process is independent of the nature of the dye component. Removal is 80-100% and the dyes may be recovered in re-usable form. Other coloured components can be removed, e.g, humic acids and organic intermediates, esp. sulphonated aromatics. No special appts. or maintenance is involved.
