Clearances are measured for a workpiece (16) retained between a baseplate (14) and fixed stops (15,15') placed against its outer surface (17) or inner surface (18). A calibration procedure fixes the centre point (31) whose coordinates are stored in the computer. With the workpiece (16) in position the new centre point is computed and stored, from which axial clearance is deduced with a radially movable feeler (25) and radial clearance with an axially movable feeler (32). ADVANTAGE - Distance measurements in radial and axial directions at both inner and outer surfaces can be made within narrow tolerances and automated easily.
