Snow and ice thawing on road surfaces - by applying soluble inorganic salt simultaneously treated with liq. water soluble silicate and miscible alcohol mixt. in mechanical spreading

The thawing comprises spreading solid particles contg. water-soluble inorganic salt (I) on the surface; and during spreading, the particles are mixed evenly with below 5 wt.% (w.r.t. (I)) of an additive (II) which is liq. at the application temp. and contg. water-soluble silicate(s) (III) and water-miscible organic cpd(s). (IV). The liq. additive (II), contains Na and/or K silicate (III) and OH cpd(s)., pref. a mono- to tri-hydric alcohol (IV). The appts. has a mechanical spreader mounted on a vehicle or trailer, a container for (II) and pipe(s) for adding (II) to (I) or for adding an aq. medium (V) to moisten (I). Pref. amt. of (II) is below 3 (not above 1) wt.%, w.r.t. anhydrous component of (II) and the wt. of (I); (II) is combined with (I) immediately before or during mechanical spreading from a mobile distributor, and is applied to (I) separately or mixed with aq. medium (V); (II) also contains an aq. soln. of base(s) and other component(s), e.g. corrosion inhibitor; the appts. is arranged to apply (II) to (I), e.g. by spraying, during mechanical spreading; and the appts. is a motor vehicle with a storage space for (I) and storage space(s) for (V) (comprising additive II and opt. an aq. diluent). Pref. deicing salt is NaCl or CaCl and (IV) is propanol, ethylene glycol, propane-1,2-diol, glycerol etc.; and (ii) is stabilised at pH 10-13 by addn. of NaOH, triethanolamine etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - The salt spreading has improved efficiency and effectiveness (w.r.t. rate of thaw etc.); and the process may also be used together with the moist salt method
