Tunnel furnace for firing ceramic tiles in which the tiles stacked in piles (2) are passed through preheating (V) firing (B) and cooling (K) zones and the firing zone is free of through-flowing air by the presence of a by-pass (18) which has a lower air flow resistance than that of the firing zone. The air is blown through the by-pass by an air blower (20) near the exit door (15) of the furnace. ADVANTAGE - A firing chamber is produced without using separation walls or doors and without a blower being installed in the by-pass conduit.
