A setting instrument for a carburettor of an IC engine has an optic/acoustic indicator (17) to show the operator if the setting is in a particular range. Three different modes of indication are provided; below optimum setting range; inside optimum setting range and above optimum setting range. A simple indicator is off at the low setting, on for the required setting and operates intermittently when above the range. The LED indicator, or the acoustic generator are simple to drive from the processor control (15). The optimum range indicator is operated after a set time delay after reaching the range. This time delay is determined by a set number of engine cycles. ADVANTAGE - Simple tuning control, fail-safe indication.
