Water-resistant polyester fibre - by melt spinning a mixt. of PET and a copolymer contg. tetra:fluoroethylene, ethylene@ and opt. other alpha-olefin(s)@
Fibres (I) esp. continuous filaments, are based on thermoplastic polyester (II) with additional below 10 wt.% polyfluorocarbon (III). (III) is a copolymer based on tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), ethylene and opt. other alpha-olefin(s) (IV) with a MFI of at least 50 g/10 mins., measured at 297 deg. C with a nozzle of dia 2.1 mm and length 8 mm, under a 2-kg load. More specifically, (III) has m.pt. above 160 deg. C and MFI of 50-70 g/10 mins., it contains up to 60 mol.% TFE units, 40-60 mol.% ethylene units and 0-20 mol. units of (IV). Pref. (III) is a terpolymer of TFE, ethylene and hexafluoropropene (HFP) or perfluoropropyl vinyl ether (PPVE). (II) is PET or a copolymer contg. polyethylene terephthalate units. (I) consists of multifilaments with titre 30-1500 dtex, single filaments dia. below 100 microns, max. tensile strength above 10 (pref. 10-15) cN/tex and max. elongation 15-60%. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of filters, demisters, bandages, sewing thread, protective and working clothing, packing for seals, rainwear and sportswear (claimed). The fibre is highly water-repellent and dirt repellent and resistant to hydrolysis, and can be melt-spun on conventional equipment without further treatment
