The an electrochemical sensor has an electrolyte chamber open at one side with a sealing membrane (5) enabling diffusion of the gas to be detected into the chamber. Working (6) and counter (7) electrodes protrude into the chamber. There may be a separate constant potential reference electrode (8) or the counter electrode serves as one. The part of the chamber contg. the reference electrode is separated from the part contg. the working electrode. Each part is filed with a suitable electrolyte for the electrode in it. The film (11) separating the chambers is not or partically not transmissive for the potential determining ions from the electrolyte, but is at least slightly electrically conducting. ADVANTAGE - Extended running time and reduced drift.
