The piezoelectric element (1) consists of two plates (2) mounted one on top of the other and polarised in opposite directions, with electrodes (9) on the top (7) and underside (8) of the combination. The combination stands on a pedestal (3) allowing for bending under acceleration. A test voltage applied to a portion (11a) of each electrode should produce deformation which is measurable by the voltage induced between the other portions (11b) of the overlying and underlying electrodes.
