A tandem warhead comprising a forward (3) and main (7) hollow charge, sepd. by an explosion gas shield (6). The latter is tapered forwards and consists of a forward part (11) and a rear part (12), both parts being held together by a ring-shaped clamping component (13). The explosion gas shield (6) absorbs most of the explosion gas energy (15) on detonation of the forward charge (3), by its plasic deformation. The base outer dia. of the forward part (11) of the shield (6) is one third to one half that of the rear part of the shield. USE/ADVANTAGE - So called tandem warheads are intended for use against armoured target of a twin active component component nature. The forward hollow charge is detonated first inactivating the first armour compound so that the spike of the time delayed main charge works against the main armoured component without its power being reduced. Compared with previous tandem warheads the claimed design has reduced mass and shorter length.
