Sludge is mechanically pre-dried, a drainage system is provided for further dewatering by thermally drying a part of the sludge, and mechanical dewatering is then continued. The drainage system is formed within the sludge body itself by producing thermally dried channels, layers and/or lattices. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used esp. in dewatering sewage sludge. Pelletising of the sludge in order to apply a coating of dried material, and the resulting increase in sludge volume, are avoided, and further de-watering is achieved in a simplified manner.
