The canal (10) has a bottom (12) and an embankment (14) with a relatively steep section (16) which is rectangular in cross-section and extends downwards over the bottom (12). A second flatter section (18) comprises a layer (20) of building stones under which is a mineral filter layer (22). The water level extends above the relatively steep section (16). The rectangular cross-section container which is open at the top and bottom is rammed at an angle into the waterway bed at the new embankment line to a depth below the foot point of the embankment. The waterway bed material is removed from the container which is then filled with sealing material. USE/ADVANTAGE - To widen a canal and protect the embankment against subsidence.
