The continuous furnace, to heat thin slabs, has at least two parallel sections to take separated slabs from two cast strands and a moving section to shift the slab into a holding section for rolling. The length of the shortened holding section (4) is smalller than the max. length of the slab (5) on the moving section (2) moving across the line of travel through the furnace sections. The reduced holding section (4) can be of a 0.00mm length, for elimination, so that the continuous furnace is composed only of sections to take the incoming sepd. slabs and the section to move the slabs (5) across the longitudinal direction of travel through the furnace. The total length of the furnace can be reduced by about 14%, with an increased speed through the furnace of about 20% and a reduction in the travelling time of the moving section (2) of about 4%. ADVANTAGE - The structured furnace sections give a reduced cost of the furnace.
