In a biological sewage treatment plant, activated sludge sedimented in the clarifier tank (NB) is separated into recirculation sludge (RS) and excess sludge (US). A de-watering procedure is used to reduce the volume of the excess sludge and, if necessary, also of the recirculation sludge. Sludge recirculation is controlled by dividing the sludge before sepn. into active and non-active microorganisms. Simultaneous analysis of one or more samples of the activated sludge is carried out to establish the quantity of active microorganisms in relation to the quantity of non-active microorganisms and to determine their sepn. parameters. These parameters are then used to control the sepn. process and the recirculated sludge is thereby enriched with active microorganisms. USE/ADVANTAGE - For control of activated sludge sewage treatment systems. Activation of the sludge in the activation tank (BB) is successfully achieved and the quantity of unnecessary water and inert material which is recirculated is greatly reduced.
