The road surface (1) has grooves across it which, when driven over, produce the desired sound from the car tyre. The grooves may be evenly or unevenly spaced on either side of the track to produce different sound effects. The sequence of grooves pref. generates a constant acoustic frequency. Variable frequencies may be generated by changing the groove pattern. The latter may be used on both sides of the track or on one side only.
