Cop transport units are transported in upright position on separate caddies (19) and distributed on transverse transport tracks (17) from supply path (2) leading past the winding stations. The transverse tracks lead to the winding stations. A connecting means, e.g. in the form of guide profile (11) that has several parts and moves vertically, is at the branching points of the transverse transport tracks (7) for rendering the cross transport means (9) in the feed path area (2) ineffective. Along the feed path (2), on the side opposite the transverse transport tracks (7), there is a transport belt (5). The width of the belt (5) is at the most equivalent to half of the width of the baseplates for the caddies (19). The cross transport means take the form of belts (9) that reach as far as the transport belt (5) of the feed path (2). The transport belt (5) has at least one feed point for caddies between its end points. ADVANTAGE - The distribution of caddies into the transverse transport tracks can take place independently of the length of the tracks.
