Poly-1-allyl-3,4-dimethylene-pyrrolidinium salts of formula (I) are new. R = H, 1-22C alkyl or alkylcarbamoylemthyl; X = an anion; and n = the deg. of polymerisation. (I) are prepd. by reacting a triallylammonium salt of formula (III) with 1-50 mole.% of a metal bicarbonate (esp. NaHSO3) in an aq. medium at pH 5-10 under oxidising conditions, pref. provided by aerations. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) and their mixts. with triallylammonium salts are useful as crosslinking agents in the polymerisation of dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (II), giving branched polymers with a reduced residual oligomer content.
