The respirator includes a filter connection (10) which has a connection identifier (11) corresp. to the filter characteristic of the filter insert (2,3). The identifier(11) is brought into contact with a filter identifier (12) assigned to the type of filter, with the fitting of the filter insert (2,3). At least one electrical contact is operated corresp to the identifiers (11,12), which adjusts the fan drive (40) and its variable output power, to the filter characteristic assigned to the fitted filter insert. In the assembled condition of the filter insert (3) or the filter adapter (2) with the filter connection (10), the electrical contacts are closed. The closure influences the driving output of the fan drive (40) or activates the detection sensor (44). ADVANTAGE - Fixing filter inserts of different filter characteristics into mask to provide breathable air driven by fan. Output power of fan is monitored automatically regarding type of filter insert used and matched to filter type accordingly.
