The clutch (5) is operated by a positioning drive (7) under the control of a rotational speed regulator (17) incorporating a two-term controller (25) whose output depends upon the deviation of engine output shaft speed (19) from a set-point (21) linked (11) to the accelerator pedal (9). The integral component (29) denoting the temporal variation of the error signal is switched out (35) by a sign comparator (33) when its polarity is opposed to that of the combination (31) of the proportional (27) and the integral components of the positioning signal. ADVANTAGE - Oscillations degrading quality of adjustment and unnecessarily loading clutch are prevented.
