Optically active spirolactones of formula (I) are new: R1 and R2 = up to 15C alkyl or alkenyl opt. monosubstd. by CN or at least mono-substd. by F or Cl and opt. also with one CH2 replaced by -O-, -CO-,, -O.CO-, -CO.O- or -O.CO.O-; A1 = 1,4-phenylene, pyridin-2,5-diyl, pyrimidin- 2,5-diyl, pyrazin-2,5-diyl, pyridazin-3,6-diyl, 1,3,4-thiadiazol-2,5-diyl, 1,2,4- thiadiazol-3,5-diyl, trans-1,4-cyclo- hexylene (opt. mono- or di-substd. by F and opt. with 1 or 2 nonadjacent CH2 gps. replaced by -O- and/or -S-) and/or a CH-gp.; Z1 = -CO.O-, -O.CO-, -CH2.O-, -O.CH2-, -(CH2)2-, -CH=CH-, -C=C- or a single bond; Q1 = -CH2- or -CO-; and m and n = 0, 1 or 2. USE/ADVANTAGE - Ferroelec. liq. crystal media are claimed which comprise (i) an achiral smectic component and (ii) a chiral component with one or more (I) present as chiral dopant. Also claimed are liq. crystal-, switching- and display devices contg. such a medium.
