The channel-type machine shaft (2) which extends over the ship beam begins above the freeboard depth. A projecting outer skin (7) limits the shaft outwards. The lateral strength bond in which the shaft is partly arranged is extremely narrowly. The inner longitudinal wall (9) of the bond, which forms the inner limit of the shaft runs at least in the upper area on the same hold width as in the other holds.
