Upholstered support (I) has a cushioned layer of plastic foam (A), covered with a decorative (esp. textile) layer (B) on the visible side, and a backing layer (C) (esp. of textile), the layers being bonded together by local adhesion, by applying adhesive (esp. hot-melt adhesive film) (D) between the layers and heating the assembly in a stamping press with ridged projections to form seam-like bonded zones. Process comprises (1) preheating without pressure so as to at least partly soften the layers, and (2) compressing the layers along the seam lines as above and heating to the activation temp. of (D), so that the material is permanently deformed and bonded together at the "seams". USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for producing upholstered seats, back-rests etc. for cars and caravans. Process prevents formation of an unbonded "tunnel" along the middle of the seam which rapidly gives irregular seam with unsightly appearance. Upholstered prods. obtd. are durable and retain good appearance for a long time in use.
