Cooling comprises transferring the heat from the exhaust to the feed-air through an air-air heat exchanger (2). A liq., pref. water, is fed to the heat exchanger at the side (6) of the feed. Condensn. is pref. passed into the feed side (6) of the heat exchanger (2), collected from the outlet side (18) and/or other sections of the assembly. Before the condensn. is returned to the feed side (6) of the heat exchanger (2), it is pref. treated to remove any residual heat. The condensn. is returned to the exchanger as a spray, or as a film spread on the heat exchanger surfaces (23). Before the exhaust air from the heat exchanger (2) is released into the atmos., it is mixed with air from the atmos. and/or air from the heat exchanger (2), and any condensn. is collected for return to the feed side (6) of the heat exchanger (2). The air-air heat exchanger (2) has a plate (23) of solid material as the heat exchange surface. The heat is transferred in a heat-carrying medium. USE/ADVANTAGE - The system is used in the composting of organic waste, where fresh air is fed in to assist the rotting process. The operation increases the capacity of the air-air heat exchanger to improve the composting process and the efficiency of the composting assembly.
