The shape of the raised members (31) is such that two stacking elements of two superposed crates can engage in each other. The side walls of the crate do not exceed the height of the stacking elements. The underneath part of the crate has downwardly pointing projections which engage round the outer upper edge of the beakers placed in the crate compartments below. The base of the crate can form a grid with each compartment defined downwards by at least two intersecting webs (33,34).
