Demountable modular pyrolysis installation - for purificn. of organics-contaminated earth, with heat recovery and exhaust gas scrubbing

Dry distillation installation, for cleaning of toxic organic chemical contaminated soil, particularly oil or tar laden earth, by sweating at 400-650 deg.C in a retort, cooling and recovery of the purified earth, has the retort preceded by a classifier and a size reducing mill. The retort (2) is associated with a combustion chamber (10) for receiving the displaced gases, a recovery heat exchanger (11) and a combined quench (13) and scrubber (14) unit, for smoke purification (12), that the retort possesses an auxiliary firing nozzle (15) and that the installation components (2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) together with all connections are accommodated in containers (17-23). Pref. each container unit is provided with its own 'fund' for protection of groundwater from spillage of leachate, etc. Pref. form of retort (2) is a rotary kiln (8). USE/ADVANTAGE - Mobile/skid-mounted pyrolysis unit for decontamination of organic chemicals, tar or oil laden soils.
