The component comprises a section (3) of hot-rolled steel bar, surface-treated to give an outer zone (11) stronger than the core (8). The latter contains an axial tapped bore in which the screwed ends of the bars (1,1') engage. The thread in the component can be so profiled (9) as to give a load-transfer area (10) at the join between the core and the outer zone. There can be spiral ribs on the outside of roughly the same pitch as the threads on the bar ends. USE/ADVANTAGE - In particular for use for concrete reinforcement or pre-stressing steel bars whose ends are threaded. Compact, light in weight, and reduces wear on tools forming tapped bore.
