Continuous fermentation is carried out in two fermentation units. In the first, substrate addition is controlled to give a constant substrate concn. and so a constant product concn. In the second fermentation unit, material is introduced from the first ferementation unit at a caculated bleed rate. The product is removed from both units by microfiltration and/or ultrafiltration units, the retentate being returned to the system, with part of the stream from the second fermenter being removed from the system. The product is obtained from the permeate conventionally, e.g. by electrodialysis, reverse osmosis or pervaporation. The process is controlled by the mass guidance control system. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for the prodn. of butanol, methanol or acetone, or for producing citric, lactic, tartaric, succinic, oxalic, malic or fumaric acid, and esp. for aceticacid prodn. with increased yield.
