In controlling the supply and discharge of water in washing machines and similar appliances, the waste water flowing out of the machine is measured in respect of its quality and the water can subsequently be discharged into the sewage system or led to a water processing system, from which it will be led back to the washing machine. The associated machine features a sensor (3) for measuring the water quality, a control unit (16) supplied with the measured values, and an adjusting valve (4) with a connection (7) for the waste water line (2), a connection (8) for a disposal line (9), and a connection (10) for a water recycling line (11). ADVANTAGE - Permits waste water from the machine to be recycled if the water is sufficiently clean.
