In the ultrasonic testing of a cylindrical body (2) using the pulse-echo method, an echo signal is produced by a flow or defect (30) within the cylindrical body (2) and captured by a receiver (14). The incident wave (20) and its reflection (22) are in a sloping plane which is inclined to a plane containing the central axis (5) of the cylindrical body (2). The emitting and receving surface of the ultrasonic wave emitter (12) and the receiver (14) are arranged symmetrically to either side of the central axis (5) of the cylindrical body. USE/ADVANTAGE - The system and appts. is intended primarily for use in the ultrasonic testing of centering bolts within the core spacer plate of a nuclear reactor. The bolts are to and in the positioning of fuel elements and have to be tested in situ. ADVANTAGE - Due to the presence of both solid bolts and cylindrical bored bolts two different techniques have had to be used in their testing. The claimed invention obviates this need.
