An immersion lamp unit, for UV photochemical reactions, has a hermetically sealed quartz glass immersion tube contg. a mercury emitter with axially opposite electrodes, the novelty being that (i) the space between the emitter (1) and the immersion tube (2) is evacuated; (ii) the immersion tube (2) is spaced from a surrounding protective tube (3) which is opaque to UV radiation; and (iii) the region between the protective tube (3) and the immersion tube (2) at the connection end (4) is sealed against light escape by a cover (12). ADVANTAGE - The lamp unit can be used in laboratories for photochemical reaction even of small sample amounts using short wave UV irradiation and protects the immediate surroundings of the sample against UV.
