Treatment of Ca hypochlorite (I) comprises (a) preparing a suspension (II) or (I) in water; (b) adding H2O2 with continuous mixing and cooling, to form CaCl2, O2 and water; (c) cooling the O2 formed to remove the condensation and then discharging it; and (d) sepg. the mixt., after neutralisation, into a solid phase, suitable for disposal and a liq. phase for treatment as waste liquor. The CaCl2 formed may be pref. converted to another Ca salt by adding the corresp. acid (III). A chemniluminescent sensor may be used for monitoring the reaction. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for treating (I) from waste gas scrubbers and decontamination of ABC-materials and appts. It is environmentally friendly and economical. Cl2 emission is avoided, harmless prods. can be obtd. and the risk of fire or explosion is reduced by mixing (I) with water before adding H2O2.
