The monitoring system has a piezo device used as a motion detector (10). The output of the detector is amplified (12) and is shaped (16) for input to a counter (18) and clock system (26). The overall system is controlled by a microprocessor (28) with an associated memory (32) that logs the time at which motions of the article occur. The frequency and amplitude pattern allows the means of transportation, e.g. car, train, to be identified. ADVANTAGE - Allows transportation history to be established.
