The navigation system contains a vehicle position determination system (6) i.e. GPS, an accident detection arrangement (7,8) and a memory device (10) i.e. CD-ROM for storing rate plan information usable by the position determination system and information for use in analysing the accident. The memory device stops storing information when the accident detection system detects the occurrence of an accident. It stores information about the vehicle position at which the accident occurred and can store route information, driver's speech and driving condition information. A communication device (14) sends out this data to relevant receivers e.g. police station or hospital in the event of an accident. USE - Enables accident detection and identification of accident location.
