The arrangement assesses how many heat sources in a two dimensional picture of the area are present by sweeping (4) a one dimensional array of heat sensitive (pyroelectric) detectors round to form the picture. Remembering the previous positions of heat sources and any irregularities, the system discriminates between the early stages of fire and incidental sources of heat (e.g. humans) before raising alarm. A wider camera (1) and the support are coupled by a rotating mechanism turning in at least two directions.
